This was not really a fell race, more a hilly trail. The start in the village quickly becomes the main climb on road then trail about 250m ascent followed by a fast track descending over about 1.5miles. We turned uphill again on a rocky path for .75 mile, about 100m ascent to the top of the route and then it was head for home as fast as you could go. Rod strained something and said he was not far in front of me. James encouraged Ali all the way round. It was a well organised event and the Derwentwater Arms was open and welcoming for all the necessary facilities & beer.

10 Jun, Castleton, AM (6 m / 1500')

Thanks to a dramatic improvement in the weather during the race day, the 175 starters were greeted with perfect conditions for the 6 mile race along the ridge line from Lose Hill to Mam Tor. During the pre race warm-up, I mentioned to Lloyd Taggart that the long standing record was a distinct possibility with such favourable conditions. The phase “so near yet so far” can best describe the run of Messer Taggart as he ran away from the field to record a fantastic time of 40m 34s, but just 12 seconds short of the record. Nick Leigh ran strongly for 2nd place with Andrew Middleditch in third. Further down the field Stuart Bradstock collected the spoils for 1st local and 1st V40. Ron Fawcett belied his age and came in an excellent 15th for 1st V50. The women were led home by Estelle McGuire with Rosalind Marsh making the long trip from Portsmouth all the more worthwhile by taking 2nd place. The rest of the field revelled in the evening sunlight, and for those who were not too tired on the last climb up to Mam Tor, the sight of the paragliders swooping overhead was as spectacular as the views.

Courtesy of Nick... A normal hectic, fast and flat start across a big field saw quite a bottle neck as the route turned up a rather narrow lane. Having run up the lane with Rod and Andy as a warm up, I thought it would be a good idea to get as close to front as possible. However, unbeknown to the first group which Rod and I were on the back of, some "helpful" passer-by(?)/marshal/guy just having a laugh, put himself in the middle of the road and directed the leaders up what turned out to be the descent route!! After about 100 yards people realised their mistake (including both the two eventual winners) and by the time we got back to the proper route we right at the back! It took me about another 1/2 mile to get back to where we were (sorry again Mark for the elbowing!), but Rod paced it better than me. I paid the price of my 100m sprint effort to get through the field by crossing the line at barely more than walking pace after being about 5 places behind Rod at the top! For even more of a laugh have a look at the thread on the FRA website with various peoples stories, with people managing to get lost again on the way down, and someone not even starting because he'd locked his race number, fell shoes and keys! in his car. http://www.fellrunner.org.uk/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=932 What a fun night!

2 Aug, Bradwell, BS (4.5 m / 650')

Good turnout from the Club for this nice race from the recreation ground at Bradwell. A quick start along the road through the village and then straight up the main climb on a narrow path. Some fast running along the ridge on a mixture of rough tracks, grass and twisty bits through head height ferns before a tricky but fast descent back to the rec and a cruel half turn round the field to finish! Lovely weather too after the cold snap at Goyts Moss.

12 Harriers ran this 6 and a bit mile course over towards Chinley. Another course record fell to Lloyd Taggart (by 3 seconds!) but some good performances, with I think everyone improving their times from last year!

17 Aug, Eccles Pike, BS (3.5 m / 650')

Conditions were a lot better this year as well, no lightning, no rain, no mud (was it just mud last year?) only fast hard tracks. Steep up to the top of the Pike but the killer was definitely the last climb back up the road from the pub to the playing fields. The race was won by Andi "Roadrunner" Jones in 19:59 and the lady home was Estelle Maguire in 27:34.
