Mount Famine

Mount Famine   Six Miles  6th May 2000

Hayfield Series Race No. 2

The second race in the Hayfield series took place on another beautiful day. Just a week after the Downfall race there was another good turn out for Glossopdale. Mount Famine is a relentless six miles of hard ups and fast downs. The hills combined with the heat, and a strong cross wind on the ridge crossing Mount Famine made this a grueling race – for me anyway.

Several of us were still feeling the effects of the ‘Downfall from the previous week. Although for Jackie and Gerry this was the fourth race of the week in their relentless training schedule. I feel tired just thinking about it!

Adi was first home, followed by Mike Prady.  Despite tiredness Bill Robinson still pulled in well ahead of the main field.  A close battle between Andy Wilkins and Bill Clayton was ensuing behind. In the post-race analysis, Andy insisted that the closeness of times was down to him having to administer life saving first aid to the cold ridden Bill on the slopes of Mount Famine…mmmm….

The majority of rest of the men came in within six minutes of each other in the middle of the field.

Jackie and I had a last minute race for the finish line.  I just managed to hold her off to the end.  However, I fear the result may have been very different if she hadn’t raced the night before as well.  Still all’s fair in love and fell running!

Unfortunately, John didn’t make it to the end as he fell and twisted an ankle so we wish him a speedy recovery.

Finally, welcome to newcomer Tim Snape who ran for the first time for Glossopdale today.
