Sally Blazes Home to Lead the English Rankings
The combination of scorching heat, wet underfoot conditions and marathon
distance may be the magic formula for Sally. She stormed home in first place to
gain maximum points in the English Championship and take the overall lead at the
top of the ranking table after two races.
On a day when dehydration, cramp and heat fatigue troubled many, Sally made
light work of the conditions. She ploughed the course in 3:38:11, beating off
strong competition from former winners Sarah Rowell (Pudsey & Bramley) and
Vanessa Peacock (Clayton le Moors). She took the lead before the second
checkpoint and gradually extended the gap between herself and Peacock as the
race wore on to finish eleven minutes in the clear.
Frank and Shutt were the male representation who showed after several
withdrawals. Although Shutt wisely decided not to start after failing a last
minute limping test on his injured calf. Frank managed to start and stay the
course, to finish in 3:47:37 after witnessing numerous victims falling to cramp
in the latter stages of the race.
Simon Booth (Borrowdale) won the race in 2:52:43, a minute clear of Ian
Holmes (Bingley) who had led up to the final checkpoint at Ingleborough summit.
Dave Neil turned in another power performance to finish 8th overall
and first vet home in 3:05:20.
