The 20th Tour of Tameside held in the Millenium year drew a star studded field containing several ex champions and was well supported by Glossopdale Harriers old and new. Despite the enforced withdrawals of Martin Cuddy and Neil Shuttleworth no less than 10 Harriers stayed to tough it out with probably the best field ever assembled for this popular classic six stage double marathon. Dale Gartley capped an excellent season on his return to the blue and orange with a superb 22nd position and with Simon and Frank both also in a very competitive top 100 the ‘A’ team clinched the bronze medal in the Vets team category behind strong Stockport and East Cheshire outfits. Tour debutants Neil McGraw, Rob Edwards and Bill Clayton all ‘enjoyed’ the week with Neil in particular making steady progress up the field as the week progressed. Tour junkie Nev celebrated the completion of his 20th Tour just edging out cousin Carl by less than 40 seconds after more than 6 and a half hours of intense yet friendly rivalry. Martin Morrison and John Stephenson also gave it their all particularly relishing the off-road sections.

524 started, 481 finished each receiving a specially struck medal and a commemorative bobbin – symbolic of the borough’s industrial past – customised into a ‘sands of time’ timepiece to remind every one that ‘every second counts’.
